WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities across Wake County say criminals are targeting your vehicle, not for the ride, but for what's inside.

Authorities in Wake Forest and Knightdale have been investigating hundreds of vehicle thefts where groups of criminals are not only stealing from vehicles in driveways and open garages, but shopping center parking lots as well. They are looking to pick up your personals and sell them for cash at area pawn shops.

Police say they are doing it all with your help. "Well all of these have been crimes of opportunity where people have left their vehicles unlocked, left their garages unlocked and the vehicles unlocked in the garage so they're not having to break out a window, they're not having to pry your car door open," said Capt. Ann Stephens with the Apex Police Department.

Investigators with the Apex police say 76 people have reported vehicle burglaries over the last six months. They've arrested three people and issued warrants for another person in connection with those crimes.

Wake Forest police say 20-year-old Dave Mccants and 16-year-old Timothy Hardy have also been detained on 63 assorted counts of burglary felony breaking entering and larceny into motor vehicles over the past two months.
