CHARLOTTE – The sentencing phase of Andrew Ramseur's murder trial began Tuesday. The same jurors who found Ramseur guilty of two counts of first-degree murder Friday will decide whether he should face the death penalty for his crimes.
Ramseur was convicted of killing Jennifer Vincek and Jeffrey Peck at a convenience store in 2007.
Prosecutors called three relatives of the victims to the stand. Peck’s relatives talked about what kind of person he was and how his death will affect the lives of his children. Vincek’s fiancé, David Wright, took the stand and read the last few entries in her journal that said how thankful she was for her life.
“Whatever they decide,” Wright said. “Of course I’d like to see him get the same fate that Jennifer and Jeff Peck got but on the other hand I want him to live and suffer with it if he has a conscience.”
Prosecutors also played a video recording of a phone call that Ramseur made from jail that said he was surpised that police caught him so quickly.
Ramseur’s family also took the stand and said he was a good kid growing up and couldn’t even recognize him because of his state of mind in the surveillance video from the robbery and shooting.
“I knew that it was Andrew, but no it was not the same Andrew," said Karen Ramseur, Andrew Ramseur's aunt. "And like my brother said, it was so hard to believe that he could have done something like that.”
As defense attorneys try to convince the jury to recommend life in prison for Ramseur, the family members of the victims said they’re ready and waiting for any kind of closure.
