CONCORD – The cleanup effort got under way Monday after the end of race weekend, but the wet weather wasn't helping crews or fans packing up to leave.

Thousands of people attended the Nationwide and Coca-Cola 600 Races or the festivities surrounding the race. Speedway officials say it will take days to get the area back to normal.

Crews of about 200 contractors will be picking up the trash left at the campground, grandstands and parking lots throughout the week – rain or shine. They expect to collect 100 tons of trash.

The speedway and its partners are also recycling, and have already collected about 200,000 pounds of plastic, aluminum and cardboard.
