GREENSBORO, N.C. -- While the Grasshoppers are away, the ACC Tournament will play. For the first time in history, the ACC Tournament Championship is being played in the heart of downtown Greensboro.
"I think over the last five years, we kind of put us on the map as far as the minor league baseball community," said Greensboro Grasshoppers President and General Manager, Donald Moore. "This tournament gives us the chance to host big time college baseball and kind of put ourselves on the map in that regard."
But this year, three of the four in state teams didn't even make it to the tournament. "I think the Greensboro community has responded exceptionally well, even though Wake Forest and North Carolina and Duke aren't in the tournament," said ACC Baseball Committee Chairman Ron Wellman.
In the first two days alone, more that 20,000 people have come out, from N.C. State and Florida State fans, to those with teams not even playing for the trophy.
"Watched a few games on TV and they were pretty exciting, so even though Wake Forest wasn't here, I thought I would still come down," said Wake Forest fan, Al Rives.
For tournaments like these, the turnout can often be low for the weekday games, but directors said area school kids have been filling the seats. "For the first three games, for the 12 p.m. game, we've had about 2,000 elementary school children who can actually come out and see and be exposed to college baseball,” said Moore.
And with the holiday weekend here, organizers expect even more folks to take in a game. "What's more American than baseball, it's Memorial Day, get out here," said Florida State fan Tom Weis.
The tournament will continue all weekend long at NewBridge Bank Par and tickets can be purchased at the door.
