CHARLOTTE -- The family of a murdered Charlotte man is pleading for the public's help. Devon Clement was one of several victims shot and killed in a recent wave of Queen City murders. But up to this point, no one's come forward with any substantial information his case.
Clement's family said it's been too long and it's time someone stepped up. "If you say anything anonymous nobody's gonna know it's you," said Owuan Chase, the victim’s stepfather.
Clement was gunned down nearly two weeks ago outside a Cookout fast food restaurant. Since then, the lead detective on the case said information has been less than fast flowing. "The response was quite surprising considering the number of people who were at the scene that night," said Detective Phil Rainwater.
On Friday, Clement's mother Desiree and Chase joined CMPD officials to try to affect someone's conscience. "I think a lot of it is that people are fearful of retaliation upon them," said Chase.
Police still aren't clear on whether Devon Clement was targeted or if this was a random act of crime. They did say there were reports of gang activity in the area of cookout the night of the shooting.
“There were reports of gang chants and gang signs being thrown,” said Rainwater. “There's no proof that shows that Devon did anything on behalf of a gang to provoke this."
And so, by ruling that out, it leaves the family and detectives sort of empty handed and looking for this emotional, public plea.
Investigators said an SUV similar to this one is connected to that shooting.
They said a white Nissan Armada was seen leaving the scene. Police said several people were in the vehicle and that those people have valuable information on what happened that night. Officials also said it is possible it may be found in the north area of town.
