STATESVILLE, N.C. – A jury convicted Statesville resident Andrew Ramseur of killing two people during a convenience store robbery, on Friday. Prosecutors are now asking for the death penalty.
Ramseur was charged with shooting and killing a store clerk and a customer in December 2007.
In the trial, the defense did not deny that Ramseur committed the killings. They called a psychologist to the stand to testify about Ramseur's state of mind the day of the crimes that resulted in the death of store clerk Jennifer Vincek and customer Jeff Peck.
The defense said he suffered a traumatic brain injury eight months prior to the incident. They tried to convince the jury that the injury, Ramseur's childhood history and the fact that he smoked marijuana in the hours before the shooting all contributed to his state of mind that night.
They said he doesn't even remember pulling the trigger.
Prosecutors wrapped up their case Tuesday, which included showing the security video footage of the incident.
Ramseur was also found guilty of robbery. Sentencing will begin Tuesday June 1.
