GREENSBORO – At just 15 years old, Dudley High School sophomore Dwight Adams has bowled nine perfect games.
"I come to practice daily," Dwight said. "Even though I'm not at the bowling ally, I'm still working on it at home because I have my stuff with me at all times. It feels great bowling a 300."
His dad, Calvin, coaches him, but Calvin has yet to bowl a perfect game himself. Just last month he rolled a record 299.
"You always want the player better than the coach," said Calvin Adams. "Basically, I teach him how to adjust to the lanes and ball speed. Just keeping his on eye on his mark and to see what his ball does and adjust to that."
Bowling runs in the Adams family. Dwight started bowling at 5 years old as part of a Thanksgiving family tradition, along with his late grandma and uncle, whose names are written on his shoes.
By about age 10, Dwight was already showing up his parents at the bowling ally.
"Up until the night I went into labor with him, I kept bowling," said Karen Adams. "We kept bowling and having fun all the way. Dwight, I guess that's why he has it so honestly now, from in the genes."
Dwight was recently named the Bowler of the Year by the U.S. Bowling Congress and broke the national record in his age bracket.
The Dudley honor roll student is involved in his church youth group and is planning for a successful future that makes his parents very proud.
"He wants to go to college, take up business management and he wants to get a bowling scholarship," Calvin said. "He wants to pursue bowling professionally."
"My dream is just to go up against a professional," Dwight said. "I've dreamed about it a couple of times. Just going up against him, even if I win or lose, that's my dream. But hopefully I'll win.”
