GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Charlie Engle is a fixture in the Greensboro running community.
"They see me around town, I run all the time around town so almost everybody has honked at me at one time or another or said hey, there goes that guy," Engle said.
But Engle is more than just that guy. He's one of the top Ultra-Runners in the world. In 2008, he attempted to run across the U.S. in just 45 days. His feat is documented in the film "Running America".
"'Running America" was an attempt to actually set a new world record with the fastest crossing of the United States and to do that I needed to run 70 miles per day, everyday for 45 consecutive days," Engle said. "So you'll have to see the movie to see what happens but it was incredibly difficult. There's a reason that that record has been around for about 30 years now."
Engle debuted "Running America" to his fans in Greensboro Wednesday. He said the film is much different from his other movie, Running the Sahara, because it documents what Americans were going through during the fall of 2008.
"Sept. 13, 2008, we could not have guessed that the financial crisis really hit while we were out there," Engle said. "Gas went from $2 to $4, people were sort of in a panic during that time and it was the end of the election cycle in 2008 so we weren't there to talk to people about those things but that's what they wanted to talk about because those were the things that were on their mind. And so it was fascinating to really hear Americans talk about the United States."
Wednesday's premiere at the Carolina Theater kicks off a nationwide promotional tour for the movie. Engle said he hopes his message will inspire people across the US.
"This is not an easy movie for me to show in a way," he said. "I really, really struggled in this one. Much more so than I did in Running the Sahara but what I try to do is just be honest and just say this is what it's all about. You got to put yourself out there, do your best and see what happens."
