CHARLOTTE -- The mother of two boys killed in a weekend house fire made her first court appearance Tuesday.
Orgal Opata, 26, is charged with murder and felony child abuse.
Opata's 1-year-old son, Gabriel Hawthorne, and his 2-year-old brother, Josiah Hawthorne, died Sunday in a fire at their Rowan Street home. Opata's 4-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter were able to escape.
Officials say the children were left at home alone. They say it wasn't the first incident involving Opata's children.
According to a court affidavit filed in October, a person found her 2-year-old walking down the street, and emergency responders found her other children unattended.
Opata said she was picking up her oldest daughter from school. She was charged with three counts of neglect in that case.
Her bond was set at $1 million, $500,000 for each count of murder she faces. A bond hearing will take place March 15 and a probable cause hearing will take place March 22.
