WAXHAW, N.C. – Five weeks after a deadly earthquake rocked Haiti, some organizations are facing challenges because of the country's dangerous landscape. While they have the supplies, they don't necessarily have the means to deliver them.

“The infrastructure is so damaged that getting the supplies, food and medical supplies, out to the camps is difficult,” Steve Ottaviano, assistant director for flights standards at JAARS, said.

JAARS primarily focuses on supporting bible translation in remote countries. But when the earthquake hit, the organization and many others around the world responded with aid.

One of those groups, Samaritan's Purse, had the plane and sent supplies to donate but didn't have the manpower to get it there.

So JAARS is lending 3 airplane pilots and one helicopter pilot to Samaritan's Purse. They're flying two to three times a day to deliver supplies to about a dozen small, remote towns that otherwise would be practically unreachable.

“I'm amazed at how well they're handling thing,” Ottaviano said. “Probably everybody you talk to has lost a friend or family member. I'm just amazed at their resilience.”

Pilots with JAARS also assisted Missionary Aviation Fellowship, a group with three aircraft permanently based in Haiti.
