RALEIGH – Only a few weeks into the new year, many people are already struggling with keeping their resolutions about health and exercise. But experts have a few tips on how to stick to your goals.
Trainer Jenn Burke says you should start by scheduling exercise into your daily plan.
“It is really important to put it into your daily activities, so whether you put it in your planner, your Blackberry, whatever,” she said. “If it is in there, it is going to be something you are not going to skip and push to a more convenient time.”
Finding a workout partner can be another big motivator.
“If you have a friend or a trainer or someone that's going to help you stay accountable to actually going to your workouts, it is going to help,” Burke said. “It is also going to push you harder than you will push yourself.”
And finally, other than regular workouts, make sure to figure out ways to incorporate other physical activity into your daily plan.
“Just add little bits of activity throughout your day, things that you don't even think about: instead of getting on the escalator, take the stairs whenever you can. If it is one stop a little closer than the stop on the subway, get off and walk a little bit instead of taking the subway all the way there,” Burke said. “All that extra activity adds up to a lot of calories burned throughout the day.”
