WINSTON-SALEM – The weekend snow means more business for auto repair shops over the holidays.
The snow and ice caused hundreds of accidents across the Triad, and most people won’t get their cars repaired in time for Christmas. But mechanics say even drivers who didn’t get in wrecks need to pay attention to their vehicles.
Because of the snow, Ian's Body Works already picked up 10 new jobs over the weekend, with more on the way.
“It's because of the holidays, a lot of people traveling, and going shopping and so forth and parking lot accidents," said Manager David Walsh.
Insurance adjusters they work with reported more than 1,000 accidents in the area over the weekend.
“There have been a few vehicles that have gone off road, hitting guard rails,” said Walsh. “But it's been more or less small bump ups, nothing major.”
But snowy conditions can take a toll on any vehicle. The salt and brine used by road crews is extremely corrosive and can cause rust on brakes and suspension parts. It can even corrode paint.
“As soon as all the snow is melted, I’d take it to a car wash,” said Walsh.
Insurance agents say it's best to file a claim as soon as possible to speed up the process of getting your car repaired, and it's always best to have a police report to verify what happened.
