GREENSBORO – A number of Greensboro area nonprofit organizations are working to transform some empty store fronts into winter wonderlands through the Downtown Holiday Window Display Program.

Martha Kaley, founder of Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test, joined the program to take over and redesign the empty store fronts lining Elm Street with meaningful and thought provoking holiday decor.

“Anything that we can do to help during this time, particularly call attention at this time of year to the spirit of giving, which is what all these nonprofits are about, and to demonstrate that we are a part of that is, it was an easy decision,” Kaley said.

But nonprofits aren't the only ones excited about the new store fronts. Many shoppers say those spots breathe life into downtown.

“I think it's a great idea,” shopper David Purvis said. “I think the fact that these buildings, there isn't stuff in the windows, and it's going to add more interest.”

All groups taking part in the outreach initiative are expected to have their window displays ready for the Festival of Lights event on Dec. 4.
