FORT BRAGG – Former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin stopped in the Tar Heel state Monday to sign copies of her new book at Fort Bragg.

More than 1,000 people lined up to speak with Palin and get her autograph. Some showed up as early as 1 a.m., while others drove for hours.

Palin arrived shortly after 11 a.m. She spent time signing books and speaking with members of the crowd.

"I want to cry. My son's in Iraq and Sarah Palin signed my book and high-fived me because her son is too -- from one proud Army mom from one to another," Tammy Sandt said.

Attendees said they also enjoyed spending time with so many Palin supporters.

"I just love the atmosphere that is created when you get together with all these people who believe in something, that you believe in and it just feels wonderful," said Nadine Covert, who drove in from Graham, N.C.

Late last week, Fort Bragg decided to ban media from the event because they were afraid Palin’s visit would turn into a political platform against the current administration. Officials at the Army post later changed their mind.

Although each person only got a few seconds with the former vice presidential hopeful, attendees like Sandt said it was enough to make a lasting impact.

"I felt like I had the biggest connection of my life the moment we touched hands and she high-fived me,” Sandt said. “I'll never forget this moment."
