GREENSBORO – Three dozen Jack Russell terriers need homes after their elderly owner was forced to give them up after her husband suffered a heart attack.

How to help

If you're interested in adopting one of the dogs, you can call Robin Manley at (336)414-1373. There is a $150 adoption fee that covers shots, spay and neuter and a microchip.

Dog Days in Greensboro took in the 36 dogs Sunday after their owner, a former dog breeder, could no longer care for them.

"So this woman with a 100-acre farm, a husband with 24-hour care, 36 dogs and on social security was managing to take care of these dogs for a year before she said, 'I can't. I need help,'" Robin Manley, who is volunteering her time to help find homes for the dogs, said.

All of the dogs are healthy and AKC certified and Manley says they aren't having much of a problem finding homes.

"We picked up all of the dogs on Sunday. July 26, down in Pinetown, so they were here yesterday. And what was amazing was we got to Greensboro and there were people waiting for us that wanted to adopt the dogs," Manley said.

So far, around 20 dogs have been adopted, including Kara, who will go home with Fargus and his owner John O'Toole in September.

"I shudder to think what might happen to them if people don't adopt them. What are we going to do? I don't like the alternative," O'Toole said.

Manley says any dogs not adopted by Thursday will go home with her.

"They will be coming back to my house, where my husband will probably be playing a lot of golf until I can find them permanent homes," she said.
