Most counties have a Meals on Wheels or home-delivered meals program. Those interested can contact their local senior center, Department of Social Services or United Way to find out about the program in their community. Volunteers are usually needed for deliveries.

CONCORD, N.C. -- A new location for Cabarrus County’s Meals on Wheels program will make things much easier for the charity’s volunteers.

The organization is now housed in an old restaurant where they can make their own food and continue delivering it to the community. They’ve been making the trips out to the homes of needy for the past 35 years.

“We put our offices in the front where it used to be seating for the restaurant, and in the back we have a beautiful kitchen that has everything we need in it,” said Kimberly Strong with Meals on Wheels.

The group used to rely on a local caterer and the local hospital to prepare their home-delivered meals. Now they can cook what they need from scratch.

It will take about a month for all the volunteers to cycle through at the new location and learn the new process. So far, volunteers are pleased with the site.

“It was inconvenient at times at the hospital; it was hard finding a parking spot,” said volunteer, Lee Bates. “Here, they have 60-plus parking spots and I don't think they'll ever fill it up.”
