MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -- The Morehead City Council voted unanimously to raise the speed limit in downtown from 20 mph to 30 mph.

The change would be implemented on Arendell Street between Seventh and Tenth streets. The state Department of Transportation also plans to replace the street lights, signage and cross signals in that stretch.

Leaders say the change should help traffic flow in that area, especially for trucks coming out of the nearby state port.

"What we wanted to do, if the state did come in, is to make sure the pedestrians could cross the street and get across the street while the light was red," said Morehead City Council member Paul Cordova.

City leaders said there isn't a timeline for the project as they have to wait until the DOT is ready to come down and make the changes.

Some residents welcome the higher speed limit.

"20 is way too slow. We drive 35 through the rest of Morehead City, and I think we should be able to drive 35 driving through town," Barbara Jewett, of Beaufort, said.

But others said they like the way it is now.

"It's the heart of Morehead. It's downtown. It's the oldest part of town. Slow down, give some respect," resident Wyatt Rike said.
