RALEIGH – Several of North Carolina’s fallen firefighters from across the state were recognized for their sacrifice and heroism at a parade in Raleigh Saturday morning.

Those recognized include two Salisbury firefighters – 40-year-old Vic Isler and 19-year-old Justin Monroe – who lost their lives in the line of duty more than a year ago at a five-alarm fire at the Salisbury Lumber and Supply Company.

The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation wants to remember the N.C. firefighters, also including ones from Raleigh, Pine Level, Greenville, Goldsboro, and several other cities, as well as one from the North Carolina Forestry Service.

A memorial service after the parade held the 12 fallen firefighters in places of honor. Gov. Bev Perdue and other leaders spoke of their bravery.

"When everyone's running out of a burning building, you think about who it is you see running in," Perdue said.

The firefighters joined the ranks of the 216 North Carolina firefighters who perished before them.
