RALEIGH – More than 100 bikers put their motorcycles on the street from Raleigh to Rockingham Sunday to raise money and awareness about autism during the Ride to Rock.

According to the Autism Society of America, one out of 150 children, and one in 94 boys, has the developmental disability. 10,000 families in North Carolina and 1.5 million diagnosed Americans deal with autism every day.

“Sometimes you feel a little cheated because you don’t get to do the things with your son that you would do if you had a normal son,” Tony Long, whose son was diagnosed at age two, said.

But riders, including Long, said instead of being helpless, they can do something by participating in the ride. From the capital at Ray Price Harley Davidson to the Rockingham Speedway, the bikers cruised to rally funds to help find a cause and a cure.

“We are not researchers, but we can raise money, and that money can go to somebody who can figure the whole thing out,” fundraiser Mike Kemmeries said.

The proceeds raised from Sunday’s Ride to the Rock go to benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina and the national Autism Society of America.
