CLARKTON, N.C. – People in Bladen County are picking up the pieces Tuesday after a tornado blew through the area on Monday.

The National Weather service confirmed that an EF2 tornado touched down around the area of Porterville School Road and Farmers Union Road shortly after 10:30 a.m. The tornado was on the ground for about two minutes, cutting a 1.5-mile path of destruction with wind speeds of 115 mph.

The storm tore apart the home where Tony Jacobs has lived for 41 years. It also took out his brother's house in the backyard and lifted a nearby scrap shop about 35 feet into the air. Building inspectors say four structures in the Clarkton area are uninhabitable.

Now Jacobs and his siblings are in a hotel trying to decide what to do next.

"We've got to be out of there Thursday," Jacobs said.

Emergency services said the Red Cross is helping the family, but they'll need help finding a home.

"They'll probably be bulldozered down, hauled away to the landfill and possibly rebuilding here or a modular home put back in its place," Mitchell Byrd, director of emergency services, said.

Down the road, the tornado also put Robert Ward and his family out of their home.

"To look at the outside, it doesn't look so bad, but to go inside, walls were shifted, furniture was thrown out. They were picking clothes out of trees in the back," Ward said.

The Wards are staying with friends and relying on their insurance as they start piecing their home back together.

"It's going to be a long process," Ward said. "Literally, it's a lot to do."

He said he's just relieved no one was home when the tornado hit.

"You can rebuild, but you can't get your family back," he said. "Lucky nobody was here."

Seven other homes were damaged by the tornado. But Bladen County wasn't the only area affected by the dangerous storms.

The NWS confirmed a tornado touched down in Brunswick County Monday Morning. It hit in Longwood, N.C., along Etheridge Road near Highway 904, wrecking trees and causing minor damage to a few homes.
