CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. – President Bush signed a bill into law Friday that extends benefits for at least seven weeks in every state. But since North Carolina’s unemployment is higher than six percent, people in the state will get 13 weeks.

The number of unemployed people in North Carolina jumped to seven percent in the month of October, which is the highest it’s been in almost six years.

Now workers at employment agencies across the state are reporting that more people are coming to them for help than ever before.

Cape Carteret resident Charlie Peeden said he lost his job Thursday, and he thinks an employment agency will help him out.

“I got a couple that have gone through here and they’ve helped them out, so I’m hoping they’ll do the same for me,” Peeden said.

The last time the state’s unemployment rate was this high was January 2002 in the aftermath of the Dot-Com bust and Sept. 11 attacks.
