Democrats are ahead, according to the polls, but officials expect a close finish come Election Day.
RALEIGH -- The latest Elon University poll released Saturday has some insight on how North Carolinians will vote next week.
In the presidential race, 45 percent of those polled said they'll vote Democratic, 38 percent will vote Republican and 17 percent are still undecided.
Elon poll director Hunter Bacot says despite the separation in numbers, he expects the race will still be tight.
"I think this race is going to come down to the wire and it might be one of those races where you have to wait until the wee hours of the morning to figure out who actually won,” he said. “I think it's very, very close; two strong candidates working two strong campaigns and we have this as the result. It is neck-and-neck."
In the U.S. Senate race, the poll shows Democrats up 44 percent to 37 percent but a whopping 19 percent are undecided.
Finally, in the gubernatorial race, the poll shows Democrats with a razor thin lead of about 0.7 percent. Twenty percent are still undecided in that race.
