Memorial brings horse riders together
Alexandra Hartner
Riders from across the country will saddle up in memory of a young horse rider from Hampstead.
Back in January, 18-year-old Alexandra Hartner was killed in a car accident.
"Alex was a big believer in when you get knocked off the horse, you get back on that horse," George Hartner, Alex's father, said.
With that in mind, the family decided to put together the Alex Hartner Memorial Horse Show, which will take place at the Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls Exhibition Center in Columbus County on Oct. 25 and 26.
"This show is about people having fun, being good to each other, cheering each other on, laughing, smiling, coming out of their comfort zone, enjoying those majestic animals the way Alex taught us to," Jane Hartner, Alex's mother, said.

Alex's parents said they invested her college fund into the show and all the proceeds from the event will go toward two scholarships in Alex's name. All the stalls at the exhibition center have been reserved for the show. Some riders are coming all the way from Maryland.
The Hartners say the response has been unbelievable.
"I have gotten calls from people that had big-rated shows that meant a lot to their careers that have called and said I am not going, I am going to yours,' said Mrs. Hartner.
The family was even more shocked when they heard that Steve Stephens, the course designer at the Beijing Olympics, would not only be making an appearance but would be designing the course for the event.
The show will feature games, activities and a benefit auction. On Saturday the fun begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 p.m. On Sunday, the events go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
