WILMINGTON -- UNC Wilmington received a large gift of $1.25 million Thursday. The money will be dedicated to bringing a new professor to the university.

The Dan Cameron Family Foundation donated the funds for the Distinguished Professorship of Innovation in the Nonprofit Sector.

"The professor will be bringing in the students to be doing innovative, cutting-edge work with all the nonprofits in our community and really making life better for everyone in the community," said UNCW chancellor Rosemary DePaolo.

The professor will be housed in the Department of Public and International Affairs. Laurie Paarlberg, who teaches in the department, says they are looking for a “pracademic” to take the position.

"That means that they have had professional experience,” she said. “That means that they are interested in engaged scholarship and then someone who is also an academic that can teach classes as well as engage in research."

The Cameron distinguished professor will be on campus in 2011. One of the major goals for the new professor is to help strengthen leadership in the nonprofit community.

This is the second time the Dan Cameron Family Foundation has participated in the professorship program at UNCW. Representatives from the organization say they are happy and proud to contribute to such a good cause.
