Wachovia staff prepare for job hunt
CHARLOTTE -- Job recruiters in the Charlotte area say Wachovia employees are busy updating their resumes now that the future of the company is uncertain.
Since Citigroup announced that it’s taking over the company, many have wondered how many jobs will be lost, and many employees aren’t waiting to get their pink slips to start their job search.
“Lets face it, there could be several hundred people from Wachovia in one job category, and they'll all by vying for the same jobs,” said Kenny Colbert, president of the Charlotte Employers Association. “Many don’t know if they’re coming or going, but just don’t want to wait until the last minute.”
Colbert says Wachovia employees are calling him daily for advice on job hunting. It’s something many of them haven’t had to do in years.
"There are a lot of people who are going to be out of work who've worked for some of these corporations for a number of years, and their interviewing skills are going to be rusty,” he said.

Area recruiters say even before Citigroup announced their purchasing of Wachovia, financing and banking professionals in the area have been seeking their assistance.
"They are a little weary about their jobs, especially in banking and finance, so we have received more phone calls, we’ve been helping candidates out whether it be about their resume or their job search, helping them network and get referrals," explained Andrea Seymour of Robert Half International, a financial recruitment agency.
If the layoffs do happen, not only will unemployment rates skyrocket in Charlotte, but the entire economy could take a hit. "It looks like charlotte is finally catching up with the rest of the United States,’ said Colbert.
But even with possible job loss at Wachovia, the news isn’t all bad. Recruiters say many financing jobs are available.
