CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools could announce on Wednesday if more gas conservation efforts are needed for school bus travel. Earlier this week they suspended all field trips in light of the temporary gas shortage from Hurricane Ike.

CMS had to cancel non-required field trips this week and also had to reschedule middle school softball and volleyball games to save on gas.

The district uses 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel each day to get students to and from school. Right now, school officials say that is their main priority.

The system did receive another shipment of diesel on Tuesday. However, that combined with the 36,000 gallons they had on hand is still only enough to get them through the rest of this week. Officials say they are also taking some gas from the CATS’ reserve system.

A weekly briefing will be held later Wednesday to discuss whether more conservation is needed. Stay tuned to News 14 Carolina for updates.
