CHARLOTTE -- University City Church in northeast Charlotte is opening its doors to other churches for any member willing to try a change with their Church Swap program.

Michael Stevens, the church’s senior pastor, is trying to bridge the gap between race and religion while trying to break down stereotypes. He got the idea for Church Swap through a television show with a similar name.

“Although there's still an overwhelming of African-Americans in Caucasian churches, there's very little Caucasians in black churches,” said Stevens. But he’s hoping to change all that over the next 21 days.

"I think people will have an opportunity to see for themselves,” said member Tracy Roary. “To see what things potentially are true and things that are definitely not true."

Members at University City Church say the swap is long overdue, but they’re onboard for whatever lies ahead. "I think it's going to create an excitement in the light of the exposure of the black church,” said Roary. “I think it's going to create an open invitation for those who felt hesitant and now they feel released to come and see for themselves and participate."

Stevens is calling on other churches to participate. He believes the impact could be felt beyond the Charlotte area. "It's long overdue. It's something I think is creative, it's safe and it's fun to explore and experiment. And who knows what will happen."
