4 charged in murder of 15-year old
INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -- Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey and Asst. Special Agent in Charge Tony Underwood of the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with the murder of 15-year old Jonathan Russell of 5218 Old Monroe Road in Indian Trail. Russell was shot Sunday night, April 6, while visiting friends at a mobile home on Rosetta Drive in Indian Trail. He was struck when the suspects allegedly fired a high-powered rifle into the mobile home.

“Our investigators and the SBI have worked tirelessly on this case since Sunday night,” said Sheriff Eddie Cathey. “While we can’t bring back Jonathan, we can at least provide some measure of closure for his family,” he continued. Sheriff Cathey also thanked the Monroe Police Department, the Pageland Police Department, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and the SC State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for their assistance in locating witnesses and some of the suspects in the crime.

The Sheriff did not release a motive for the shooting, but acknowledged that the investigation revealed a previously unreported robbery at the Rosetta Drive residence two weeks prior to the homicide. In that robbery, cash, property and controlled substances were stolen from the residence. Information from the robbery investigation led to the identification of the suspects in the murder investigation, according to the Sheriff.

These arrests close the second homicide investigation for the Union County Sheriff’s Office this year. “Both cases were closed with the assistance and cooperation from our residents, as well as with the cooperation of our law enforcement partners,” said the Sheriff. “I am grateful to my own staff for their dedication and perseverance in solving this crime,” he concluded.
