1 killed in single-car accident

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- One person was killed in a single-vehicle accident Thursday night in Johnston County.

Police say the car hit a utility pole just before 9:30 p.m. on Highway 210 at Cleveland Road, knocking out power to hundreds of residents. The accident also shut down a section of Highway 210 while crews worked to clear the scene.

One other person in the car was life-flighted to Duke Hospital and there is no word on theat person’s condition.

Progress Energy restored power to the area early Friday morning and Highway 210 is now back open.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.
