CHARLOTTE -- The family of Simrit Gill, a UNC Charlotte junior, spoke out about domestic violence Sunday after Gill's visitation at an East Charlotte funeral home.

Police found Gill's body in her apartment at Mission Mallard Creek Apartment Complex on Bennetville Lane in north Charlotte Friday. Her husband, Amandeep Brar, 24, is in jail charged with her murder.

After the visitation, Gill's family sent a message to domestic violence victims to come forward before it's too late.

"If it happened to one, it can happen to others," said Manpreet Brar, Gill's aunt. "We have to stop this. We have to get control."

"I know it's hard to tell anyone about any kind of abuse that they're facing. But speak up," said Mandeep Gill, Simrit Gill's brother.

Simrit Gill, 20, wed Amandeep Brar last summer in an arranged marriage. He immigrated to the U.S. to live with Gill.

"If it's anyone else, I could believe it, but not that little girl," said Manpreet Brar, who, through tears, described the brutality of the murder. "Her neck was cut with something...she tried to run probably, I don't know, but [the girl] struggled."

Mandeep Gill, said there was never any indication his sister's husband was a violent person.

"When it happened, it was a big surprise to us, a big surprise to everyone. It's was just unexpected," he said.

But Manpreet Brar said she recently found out about a conversation her niece had with Amandeep Brar some time before her murder.

"One day they had a fight and she left out the place that night. And then she came back the next day and then he told her ‘If you ever leave me again, I'm going to kill you’," Manpreet Brar said, adding Simrit Gill's closest family and friends had no prior knowledge of the incident.

Amandeep Brar is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Just last week, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police released its 2007 crime statistics. There were 13 domestic-related deaths last year. In his news conference, Chief Darrel Stephens stressed the importance that victims come forward before the situation worsens.
