CONCORD -- Fans may soon be watching drivers go from zero to 330 miles-per-hour in just four seconds.
That's if Bruton Smith's plan moves forward to build a .25-mile drag strip on his motor sports complex in Concord. Grading is already underway for the project.
But now the Concord City Council could put the brakes on it depending on what the public has to say. The groundwork for this development has stirred some dust with a few people concerned about the negative effects of another race track-like noise.
Smith owns the land for the proposed drag strip and it's already zoned for motor sports
Some Concord residents complained to the city council. So the council is holding a meeting to hear what the public has to say about the plan.
In a phone interview Smith said, “We’ve been there since 1960 so everyone who owns a home in that county should know where the speedway is.”
Concord is already home to a super speedway.
Smith points to the public benefit of this drag strip. He said people will be able to race their own street cars there preventing illegal street racing.
"They have no reason to be on the street, we provide them a very safe environment to do it,” Smith said. He said his Las Vegas drag strip attracts 400-450 street racers. Smith said he's never gotten complaints about noise at any of his other drag strips.
The drag strip is planted between a super speedway, dirt track, major interstate, and Concord's airport..
The public hearing will be Monday at the Concord municipal building at 5:30 pm. Concord City Council will set aside 15 minutes for public comment on each side of the debate.
