CHARLOTTE -- With the possibility of football at UNC Charlotte on the minds of students and alumni, some pro-football advocates are doing their part in bringing a team onto campus.

The team at Charlotte 49er Football can see the chance of football growing each day, as the school is in the process of studying what needs to be done to bring the sport to the Queen City institute. Jim Duncan, an UNCC alumni, is leading the website forward toward the ultimate goal of Charlotte 49er football.

“We are starting to see that this could be a reality and we could actually have college football in Charlotte,” said Duncan, the website’s director. “I went to the administration and asked what would it take to get a football team, and they said it would come down to the alumni and students demanding it.”

So that’s what they are doing. People can visit the website and pledge donations to a possible team. Donors are asked for their name, graduation date, and the amount they would like to contribute to 49er football.

And so far, the pledges have been pouring in.

$500,000 has been pledged to kick-off the program, and half of that is already pledged for annual costs. If season tickets were on sale today, 2,000 would have been sold already.

A survey of current and former students taken earlier this year shows overwhelming support for a football program no matter what the costs. Student Mandeep Gill is one of those that says it’s time to see the 49er’s take the field.

“Every year we stay here and watch football,” said Gill. “The only thing we can cheer for is Wake Forest and Appalachian. That’s not where we are, we are sitting in Charlotte.”

For Duncan and the rest of his pro-gridiron followers, the website might be enough to push UNCC football on the map.
