MOORESVILLE, N.C. - A woman charged with murder in the slaying of her police officer husband was indicted Wednesday on dozens of charges stemming from alleged financial crimes.

The 58 counts brought in Iredell County Superior Court against Misty Keller Witherspoon include allegations of embezzlement, identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses.

Investigators have said Witherspoon and her husband, Concord Police Officer Quinn Witherspoon, were having extreme financial troubles at the time of his September 2005 death.

According to Alan Martin, an assistant district attorney in Iredell County, Witherspoon stole at least $100,000 from her church, Whitman Park Baptist, including taking $25,000 from the church's collection plates. Martin said Witherspoon also defrauded her sister, Karen Keller.

Misty Witherspoon is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, but prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty.

At a court hearing earlier this year, Martin said Misty Witherspoon shot her husband with his service weapon as he slept on a sofa. She had just received a call from a creditor, Martin said.

Misty Witherspoon spent six months in the Iredell County jail, but has recently been free on a $500,000 secured bond. Judge Larry Ford set a new $30,000 secured bond for the financial crimes charges.
