MOORESVILLE, N.C. – A community is still in mourning for a Concord police officer one-year after his death.

Last September, Quinn Witherspoon was found dead in his Mooresville home from a gun-shot wound. Within weeks, his wife was charged with murder, but one-year later she has yet to stand trial.

It was mid-afternoon when police received a 911 call from a home in Mooresville.

“Circumstances being changed, it could have been me there on the couch,” said Det. Gerald Childress of the Mooresville Police Department.

Childress arrived to find Quinn Witherspoon, a fellow officer with the Concord Police Department, dead from a gun-shot wound to the head.

Misty Witherspoon, Quinn Witherspoon’s wife, told investigators she had accidentally dropped her husband’s weapon and it had gone off.

Days later the story fell apart.

“It was hard for people to think something could have happened with intent or malice,” said Childress.

Misty Witherspoon still lives in the family home, where some placed flowers at the front door on Wednesday, to mark the anniversary of her husband's death. She is out on bail awaiting trial, and neighbors said they rarely see her.

“It doesn’t seem like it’s been a year,” said Alan Sledge, who lives only a couple doors down from Witherspoon. He and Quinn Witherspoon used to walk their kids to school together.

“He would typically put his twins and pull them while he walked his oldest,” said Sledge.

The Witherspoon’s three children have been staying with Quinn Witherspoon’s parents. They have yet to say anything publicly negative about their daughter-in-law or the shooting.

“There are a lot of people here that do support her and support the family and children and is not necessarily a bad thing,” said Childress.

“It’s a tragic situation where kids have lost a father and parents have lost a son and Misty has lost a husband," said Sledge

Quinn Witherspoon’s father, Robert Witherspoon, who declined to be interviewed on camera, said the family supports Misty in every way possible. He said they will “wait for the trial before they render a judgment.”
