MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- The wife of a Concord police officer has been charged with murdering her husband.
Quinn Witherspoon, 34, was found dead in his Mooresville home last month. He was shot in the back of the head.
Witherspoon's 32-year-old wife, Misty, called 911 around 2 p.m. on Sept. 13. She said she accidentally dropped her husband's .40-caliber service weapon and that it went off.
But police detectives interviewed her for days and said she eventually started to crack.
Police officials say that Misty Witherspoon shot her husband in the back of the head.
“She gave us enough information to believe it was not an accident," said John Crone of the Mooresville Police Department. "She intentionally pulled the trigger and shot her husband."
Police won't discuss a motive. There was no documented history of domestic violence.
Quinn Witherspoon was a veteran K-9 officer with the Concord Police Department. He was survived by three children, who will likely be placed with his parents.
“Usually when we get to the point that we can charge somebody with the crime of murder, we feel pretty good about it," Crone said Wednesday. "This is completely different. It’s a very tragic event. We’re all concerned about the children. We’re concerned about Misty."
Misty Witherspoon is being held without bond.
Family members are having a hard time dealing with the news.
“I just ask each and every one that sees and hears this to pray for the entire family," relative Sabrina Barnes said.
Misty Witherspoon is being held without bond. She went before a judge Wednesday afternoon in Statesville.
