State championship weekend kicks off on Friday night in Raleigh and Chapel Hill and our title game previews continue. In the 3-A matchup, West Rowan is trying to make it a four-peat against Havelock.
The West Rowan head coach Scott Young has been through his share of adversity in the last month. A heart attack put him on the sidelines.
But Young and his Falcons have controlled everything pretty well this season after seeing their 46-game winning streak come to an end in week one. The falcons managed to go 12-1 the rest of the way.
Running back Dinkin Miller has gone over 2,000 yards on the ground, and the defense has held the opposition to 15 points or less on 10 occasions. Add in a shot at a fourth straight state championship, and Young can't help but think of what could be if his team can bring home the trophy.
"This is probably going to be the most special," he said.
On the other side of the equation, the Havelock Rams, a team that is making its third state title appearance since 1972 and first since 1986. The proud program has fought back from some tough spots, but head coach Jim Bob Bryant's team might be poised to take home the crown. The Ram's offense has been tough to stop. Their lowest output of the season, 24 points Their high is 76 twice with quarterback Garrett Crowe at the controls.
While Crowe calls the shots, running back Derrell Scott is a force to be reckoned with, scoring 25 touchdowns, and going over 1,700 yards on the season.
The Rams will try to cap a perfect season, while the Falcons chase title number four Saturday 11 a.m. in Chapel Hill.
