CHARLOTTE (AP) -- The Charlotte 49ers have unveiled a crisp white helmet speckled with green as the official headgear of their new football program.

Charlotte coach Brad Lambert says the program put a lot of effort into highlighting the school's brand and adds that the 49ers logo "really pops off this helmet.'' The logo is on both sides of the helmet.

Lambert said he showed several versions of the helmet to his recruiting class and the white helmet was the overwhelming favorite.

The 49ers will begin competition as an FCS independent in the fall of 2013 with the inaugural game scheduled for Aug. 31 vs. Campbell at the 49ers new football stadium, which is currently under construction.

This fall, the 49ers will work out, practice and scrimmage in preparation for the 2013 season.
