Son of ex-UNC coach now a walk-on for Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL (AP) -- The son of former North Carolina coach Butch Davis will be a walk-on quarterback for the Tar Heels under new coach Larry Fedora.

Drew Davis had planned to play for the Tar Heels before the school fired his father amid an NCAA investigation of improper benefits and academic misconduct within the program. The change put Drew's college plans in question just before a senior season in which he set a state record with 43 completions in a game.

But team spokesman Kevin Best said Drew began summer classes in Chapel Hill on Thursday.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Butch Davis said he and his wife support Drew's decision. Tammy Davis says her son was "concerned about how we'd feel'' but they told him it was his choice.
