CHARLOTTE -- Reigning U.S. Open Champion Webb Simpson is back home. The Raleigh native and Wake Forest University alum returned to his home in Charlotte to meet with the press.

It's been a little over a week since Simpson shot a two under 68 to capture his first major title.

After he finished his round, Simpson had to sweat out the final few holes to see if either Graham McDowell or Jim Furyk could tie to force a playoff. When asked he admitted his outwardly composed demeanor was all an act.

"I was faking that," Simpson said. "I was so nervous. It was probably worse than playing just because I had never been in that position before."

And Simpson knows plenty of people in the Tar Heel State were rooting for him.

"I got tons of emails which I really hadn't made a dent in returning," he said. "The support, especially last week, and just letters in the mail is just tremendous."

Johnny Harris, Quail Hollow Club president where Simpson is a member, is one of many who couldn't be prouder.

Said Harris, "We just have followed his career all along and it's just spectacular to watch what he's done."

One thing Simpson won't be doing now is playing a lot of golf. Even though the British Open is just under three weeks away, Simpson is staying home. His wife is about to give birth to their second child.

"I know that it would be fun to play in the British but I'd always regret it if she went into labor and had our second child. So, it's a no-brainer for me," he said.

Winning the U.S. Open has also eased the disappointment of losing the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow last month. But he's eagerly looking forward to next year.

"Winning this is special," Simpson said. "It's kind of redemption from playing poorly here Sunday."

He added, "But I'm already looking forward to next year, first week of May."

Where he will have a home field advantage as he hopes to add another trophy to the one he proudly possesses.
