Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame inducts four

WILMINGTON -- The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame features former NFL players, Roman Gabriel Sonny Jurgensen and Meadowlark Lemon of the Harlem Globetrotters.

This year's induction class includes Trot Nixon, a former outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, Lenny Simpson, a former professional tennis player, Ike Grainger, a former president of the United States Golf Association, and Dr. James Dineen, a sports medicine pioneer who served as New Hanover High School's first team doctor.

"It's a tremendous honor for myself and there's a lot of people involved in me receiving this award, it's not just myself it's very humbling, said Nixon. Simpson said he is also humbled by being inducted in to a hall of fame in his hometown.

The hall of fame was established with its first class in 2006 to honor prominent sports figures with ties to the Wilmington 32 former athletes, coaches and people who impacted the Wilmington sports culture have been inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.
