CHAPEL HILL -- With two ongoing NCAA investigations, a lot of things are uncertain about UNC's season opener Saturday against LSU in Atlanta.
Carolina coaches aren't saying which players will take the field and there's no indication as to how long the investigations will continue, but the nationally-ranked Tar Heels may not play up to preseason expectations with some key players possibly kept on the bench pending the outcome of the NCAA investigations.
“After all the allegations about the team, some of the players not starting and sitting out the game, you see a lot more tickets on Craigslist; good seats, 50 yard line, 10 rows up,” said lifetime UNC fan Greg Harris.
He bought tickets online for the game in Atlanta.
“If you're a true fan, you're gonna follow your team where ever they go, good or bad,” Harris said.
While there are a lot of tickets still for sale online, Ram's Club Executive Director John Montgomery said UNC sold more than 20,000 tickets to Saturday's game. He said, in fact, all but two home games this season are already sold out and fundraising for the Kenan Stadium expansion is slightly ahead of schedule.
“I definitely don't think there's going to be any effect on attendance or viewership of the game,” said Dr. Jonathan Casper, assistant professor of sport management at NC State University. “The public usually has a fairly short memory so they'll move on.”
Even though he doesn't know what will happen on the field Saturday in Atlanta, Harris expects to see a good game, no matter what the cost.
“With the tickets and all, hotel fees, driving an SUV, I'll probably drop around $400 to $500, eating and just enjoying myself,” he said. “Even if we get whooped, its worth it!”
