RALEIGH – Wake County's student assignment plan is changing again.
The school board voted early Wednesday morning to revise the plan to include address-based assignments.
In the meeting that began Tuesday night, more than 20 people spoke during a public comment session.
Those in favor of the changes argued address-based assignments will bring stability and predictability to the plan. But those who prefer the school choice plan said families are just getting used to it and changing it now would create more confusion and frustration.
The board voted along party lines to approve changing the assignment plan. It will not impact assignments until the 2013-2014 school year at the earliest.
The school board also made changes to its budget.
The county's newly approved budget gives the school district about $5 million less in funding than it had asked for. To make up the difference, the board voted to temporarily drop a proposed increase to teachers' supplement pay.
The board hopes to be able to give teachers the small raise when the state finalizes its budget.
