CHARLOTTE -- The Fletcher School hosted a free workshop for the local community Wednesday.

A Mile in My Shoes is meant to simulate what its like to be a child with a learning disability trying to learn in the classroom. Participants had to read and write facing a mirror and with their left hand.

Administrators hoped it would promote some learning disability understanding.

"We know that these kids have potential but they just need to be taught in a different way, so it's very gratifying for us to see the way they learn and then to see them succeed," said Margret Sigmon, head of Fletcher School.

News 14 Carolina reporter McKinsey Harris also took part in the free workshop.
