RALEIGH – For the second time in less than a week one of House Speaker Thom Tillis staffers has resigned. Another member of his staff stepped down after having an inappropriate relationship with a lobbyist.
The name of the staff member is not being revealed at this time.
Just last week, Tillis' Chief of Staff Charles Thomas resigned after admitting he had an inappropriate relationship with lobbyist Jessica Hayes.
Hayes also stepped down from her position at the North Carolina Home Builders Association last week.
Tillis said even with these two affairs coming to light, he does not believe anything illegal occurred, but would be open to an investigation if further information comes to light.
“If presented with new information, I would consider anything,” said Tillis, during a phone press conference Tuesday. “But based on what I've seen, I see nothing, absolutely nothing to suggest anything but an inappropriate relationship between two individuals.”
State ethics laws don't address romantic relationships between state officials and lobbyists.
However, state officials are required to disclose potential conflicts of interest and take steps to insure those conflicts don’t affect decisions they make.
