RALEIGH -- North Carolina governor candidate Bob Etheridge says he supports a temporary sales tax increase for education and opposes passage of a constitutional amendment that would limit marriage and other relationships.

The former Harnett County Democratic congressman said in an interview Monday he wanted to make clear his view on the subjects after he failed to do so at a news conference late last week.

Etheridge said he believes marriage should be limited to one man and one woman but the amendment on the May primary ballot goes beyond that to bar civil unions and would discourage businesses from recruiting certain workers.

The former state schools superintendent also said he supports departing Gov. Beverly Perdue's proposal to raise the sales tax by three-quarters of a cent.
