RALEIGH – State officials say only one of the 20 North Carolina inmates getting ready to go free will be supervised by the state.
The inmates, who were charged with violent crimes, will go free at the end of the month after a ruling on a law dating back to the 1970s. They were all sentenced under a disputed law that defined life sentences as 80-years long.
Of the 20 inmates, nine will be unsupervised. Ten others are sex offenders and will have to register with the state. The other convict will face 20 years of federal parole.
