Political Connections: Charter schools
By: News 14 Carolina Staff
NORTH CAROLINA -- Recently, a Blue Ribbon committee recommended raising the cap on charter schools, while state law allows 100 or less in the state.
Charter schools are public schools that get some state funding but are allowed to set their own curriculum and are run much like a non-profit. The committee was set up to study how the schools are working ten years after the first one opened.
To discuss this issue, Roger Gerber with the League of Charter Schools joined News 14 Carolina to talk about the schools’ future.
Also, Chris Fitzsimon from N.C. Policy Watch gave his thoughts on the issue while in the studio.
We want to know what you think. What should the state do about the number of charter schools in North Carolina?
As of 1 p.m. Saturday, voters in the News14.com Snappoll were favoring a decision to allow more charter schools, with that decision gaining 62 percent of the vote. The next closest choice, allow fewer, got 16 percent. Be sure to cast your vote in the poll to the right, and feel free to leave a comment about what you feel should be done.
