GOLDSBORO — A major project to beautify and revitalize downtown Goldsboro is making progress.
Representatives say the construction schedule for the Center Street Streetscape project is going according to plan. The concrete has been torn up on the first block of the Streetscape project between Mulberry and Ash Street, while crews work to update underground infrastructure.
The project will widen sidewalks, create parallel parking, in an effort to attract more businesses and people.
"We're really excited, the progress is on schedule everything is as we were expecting it to be at this point in the project so things are looking good," said Julie Thompson with Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.
Some business owners are excited to see the results, such as Antonio Williams who recently opened a downtown ice cream and hot dog parlor.
"It's going to definitely be pedestrian-friendly. You know you have to get used to the parallel parking because in most bigger cities people are used to that but I think that Goldsboro people are resilient," said Williams.
However other business owners along Center Street say the project is not necessary and the detoured parking is hurting their bank accounts.
"People can't get here for one thing, the place is hard to get to," said Wiley Williamson of Goldsboro Used Furniture.
The $1.9 million first block is scheduled to be completed by October 15.
