CHAPEL HILL -- The search for UNC-Chapel Hill's next chancellor is about to get underway. A search committee is holding its first meeting Monday morning to find a replacement for Chancellor Holden Thorp.
As part of the process, the 21-member search committee will host public forums for the campus to weigh in on the characteristics they'd like to see in the next chancellor.
"Commitment to integrity and we believe there are people out there who share those values," said Board of Trustees Chairman Wade Hargrove.
Thorp announced his decision to step down last month after a series of scandals surfaced at the university.
"Huge mistakes have been made. It's a very complex institution," said Hargrove. "None of those mistakes are excusable. We regret them. The chancellor has addressed them as soon as they were learned discovered."
Thorp plans to return to the chemistry department, which he used to head. The search committee will recommend the finalists to the board of trustees.
Monday's meeting will take place at 11 a.m. at the Rizzo Center.
