TROUTMAN, N.C. – A 10-year-old's caregiver is charged with assault after the girl showed up at school with bruises.
Troutman police say Sonjia Daye slapped the child when she was watching her after school. Daye worked for the Iredell-Statesville school system, but a spokeswoman says the alleged incident wasn't on school property.
Representatives with the school system say Daye has resigned, effective immediately.
Police say the alleged incident happened last week and they've been investigating ever since the child came to school with a bruise on her face. They interviewed the victim and the suspect at the police department and say they believe Daye only assaulted the child the one time.
"The school system handled everything correctly. Once they noticed the injuries to the child, they had a couple different staff members examine the child. They all noticed the exact same thing," said Detective Sgt. Corey Richard.
The police report shows it happened at Daye's home in Troutman while she was caring for the girl. Police say Daye admitted to hitting the child in the face after she soiled herself.
Police don't want to release too much about the victim to protect her identity.
